Welcome to the site entitled to Empowered Female Characters!

Movies are universal. That is, for people who have had access to a movie theater, television, phone, dvd player or any type of media source, boys and girls across the globe have been able to share a common admiration for iconic characters. Whether it be beloved Disney movies, classics that our grandparents saw in theaters, “chick-flicks” that make teen girls weak in the knees, re-makes of super hero movies or any of the countless more, movies have impacted our lives in one way or another.

This is why it’s important to be cognizant and critical of how films portray gender in the world of film. Male and female characters are both undeniably idealized and warped to appeal to specific audiences. This website is specifically designed to bring attention to the  portrayal and representation of women in American films from the late 1990’s to the present.

As a woman, I have experienced the difference of seeing an empowered female character versus a marginalized one. It’s essential to give credit to the female characters who showed the world that female power has no limit, and no boundaries. They also accentuated that gender bias exists in all nations.
